The Canadian Arctic is crucial to the national security and economics of Canada. Climate change has posed a substantial risk to arctic communities, infrastructure and foundations in the Canadian Arctic. Yet climate change also stipulates practice and research on new foundation types. In northern Canada which is largely covered by continuous permafrost, conventional pile foundations are expensive and limited by the construction window. This presentation will begin with an overview of pile foundations used in northern Canada and their design principle, and then cover the research on an innovative screw pile foundation that may be suitable for northern Canada. The screw pile can be directly installed by torque into permafrost, as compared with conventional piles installed by drilling method. Experiment of full-size pile segments was carried out using the cutting-edge cold regions facilities at University of Alberta. The objective was to examine the engineering behavior of the pile type and provide a guide to the design of this pile type. The short-term adfreeze strength of test piles, long-term stability, and installation method will be presented and the mechanisms of the adfreeze failure will be discussed.
